Tilton Auto Group teams up with Jets linebackerLITTLE FALLS—David Harris, starting linebacker for the New York Jets, will help represent and support Give the Kids Hope Foundation Inc., a nonprofit organization established to help impoverished children in New Jersey. It was launched earlier this year by Stephen Tilton Jr., chief financial officer of Tilton Automotive Group, the second-largest Chevrolet dealership in New Jersey, which owns Schumacher Chevrolet in Little Falls and Gearhart Chevrolet in Denville. On Nov. 4, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Harris will chat with fans and sign autographs at Macy’s in the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City, N.Y. On behalf of David Harris, designer Perry Ellis has arranged to donate 10 percent of net proceeds from all sales during the event to Give The Kids Hope Foundation. Tilton said the Foundation’s first goal is to help Passaic County’s Camp Hope, a free summer getaway for inner-city, underprivileged New Jersey children. Despite the county and camp executive’s efforts, economic realities have caused the facilities to deteriorate — a situation Tilton is determined to reverse. “We’re going to turn it into a five-star resort for these kids,” Tilton said. “We want the campers to feel inspired, to see what is possible in life.” Give the Kids Hope already has raised funds to replace a pool heater at Camp Hope, and has generated more than $20,000 at a golf fundraiser last month at Green Brook Country Club in North Caldwell. That money will allow for 700 additional campers for the 2011 summer season, bringing the total number of children enjoying Camp Hope to 3,000. Growing up in a blue-collar neighborhood in Michigan, Harris couldn’t afford to attend camp; now he can help other children have that opportunity. “Camp Hope offers kids the chance to get away from the streets and just have a lot of fun,” Harris said. David Harris of the NY Jets Teams Up With Reebok and Give The Kids Hope Foundation to Donate $40,000 in New Shoes to Underprivileged and Special Needs Kids at Camp Hope .
David Harris, the starting middle linebacker for the New York Jets football team, has partnered with Reebok to provide new sneakers to underprivileged and special needs children who will attend Camp Hope in West Milford, New Jersey this coming summer season. The effort has yielded a shipment of 450 pairs of new Reebok sneakers that are valued at an estimated $40,000. The shoes will be distributed through the non-profit organization Give the Kids Hope Foundation, at the new David Harris Sneaker Shack on the Camp Hope premises.
David Harris, who has been a volunteer and an active supporter of Give The Kids Hope Foundation, Inc., since its inception in 2010, is drawn to this non-profit organization and its mission to help underprivileged children because he grew up in a working class neighborhood in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where his family could not afford much luxury; he relates to the struggles that all low-income families face and applauds the work being done at Camp Hope of New Jersey, which is situated on 62 acres and serves 2700 children from low-income families throughout Passaic County every summer. There is no fee to the children who qualify to attend this camp.
“Camp Hope is a place where kids can get away and experience things in life that they wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to do—the types of things that can influence the path they take and directly impact their lives,” said Harris.
Give The Kids Hope Foundation, which supports educational and recreational programs for underprivileged children in New Jersey, was founded in 2010 by Stephen Tilton Jr. of Schumacher Chevrolet in Little Falls, NJ and Gearhart Chevrolet in Denville, N.J. The foundation, along with the Camp Hope Commission and Passaic County Freeholders, honored Harris for his charitable contribution on June 8th at Camp Hope, with a ribbon cutting ceremony and dedication of the new David Harris Sneaker Shack housed on the camp premises and later that same day, a separate honor was given to Stephen Tilton Jr. for his generosity, commitment and dedication to the camp and the children they serve. The adjacent dining hall was dedicated and named: Stephen Tilton Jr. Hall. Freeholder Bruce James gave a short presentation citing that Stephen Tilton has been a true angel to Camp Hope.
David Harris, a New Jersey resident and a starting middle linebacker for the NY JETS, was recently presented with the Spirit of Hope Award by Give the Kids Hope Foundation at its annual golf outing on May 23, 2011. He was recognized for his enthusiastic volunteer support and for the inspiration and awareness he has brought to the foundation and its cause. He has fast become a positive role model to many underprivileged children in New Jersey and is working to inspire and encourage them to follow their dreams and reach for the stars, because, in his words, “there is always hope”.
